Known locally as 'Issan' the Northeast of Thailand is the country's largest region and a place visitor tend to explore less than other regions. Essentially a series of flat plains with the Phu Pan mountain ranges running down their middle, the northeast has been influenced by a number of ancient civilizations (including the Khmers), all of which left their ruins, their historical sites and their artefacts.
